I've had a few people keen for me to organise "the Quest for the Tuft-tailed Phascogale (Part 3)", which would include: - camping at Dingo Creek for a week - exploring a very rare stand of undisturbed old-growth / Mixed Forest; towering forest giants and rainforest understorey - spotlighting & night walks - flora, insect, bird and mammal surveys - possibly live animal trapping - mega-treeclimbing to overlook Mixed Forest area from the canopy I cant commit at this stage, as I'm also trying to line up paid work, but tentative dates: Sunday Nov 30 - Saturday Dec 6th Perhaps people who contacted you about the old-growth walk but are facing being turned away could be offered this alternative? There is no fee, but expenses are shared. Let me know, I'll try and make a definitely date soon. Tony Quoll

To build upon our recent "success" in the forest, there will be a Community Action Day in support of our local forests on Sunday 13 April, and the UBAG appeals to all of its supporters to spread the word and come along with your Ideas for Action.

We will meet in the car park of the Gembrook Community Centre (Melway Map 189, J10) at 9 am.

An information sheet is attached. For more info, or if you can offer assistance, please contact Bob Thompson on 9702 1017.

Our aim is to build sufficient local community momentum that key politicians will decide to impose a total end to any further logging in the Upper Bunyip forestry block. This in turn will pave the way for alternative management of the block as a reserve for passive recreation, and a haven for passive eco-tourism. regards to all, Bob Thompson President - UBAG Inc.

Have Your Say On The Greater Otways National Park

MAKE A VEAC SUBMISION

The Victorian Environment Assessment Council, which has the task of determining the size and management of an expanded Otways reserve system, is asking for public submissions by 28th April 2003. Whether your submission is half a page or twenty pages, OREN urges all interested people (and groups) to be involved in this process. The logging industry has already begun a loud campaign to stop an expanded National Park and convince the government that logging should continue. The (small but loud) opposition to an expanded National Park makes it even more important that lots of pro- conservation submissions are received by VEAC, particularly from people in the Otway region. OREN asks that all members and supporters make a submission and encourage others to do so too Individuals, conservation and community groups need to be actively involved in the VEAC process which will determine the size and management of an expanded Otways reserve system. The greater the community involvement in the assessment the more likely the government will stick with the policy and the better the conservation outcomes will be. The woodchip and logging industries will argue, through this process and in the media, that logging should continue. Already a group, called ˜Our Parks", opposing a National Park has been formed and had a meeting on the 20th March attended by over a hundred people. Some farmers attended who believed their land would be taken away from them for the National Park. Attitudes like those raise questions as to what lies and other scare tactics are being used to get local people to oppose the National Park.

The VEAC process is broken up into three stages:

1) Discussions paper, September 2003

2) Draft proposals paper, April 2004

3) Final Report to Minister, September 2004.

Submissions for discussion paper close 28 April 2003.

As part of the VEAC Discussion paper, VEAC wants to know why particular areas should be included in a new reserve system for the Otways. When writing submissions it is important to realise that the State government has already publicly committed to creating a National Park from Cape Otway to Anglesea up to the Otways ridge and include all key rainforest areas (presumably Rainforest Sites of Significance which fall within this area). Hence it is highly likely that the area that the government has already committed will be included in the new reserve system. For other areas such as the Geelong Catchment area, Warrnambool Catchment area and forest west of Cape Otway, community groups and individuals will need to write strong submissions that argue for protection of these areas along with what the government has already publicly committed to do. However mention of the areas the Government is committed to protect still needs to be included or the logging industry will argue no-one is interested in the conservation value of these areas so logging can proceed. Issues that can be included in submissions Conservation values.

1· Wildlife and forests in general (in relation to the fact only a limited amount remains in Western Victoria)

2· Endangered species and wildlife listed under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act,

3· Cool Temperate Rainforest,

4· Old growth forest or veteran trees,

9· Historic or cultural values.

Economic values could include:

Press Release: (Friday January 3, 2003)

The Yorta Yorta Celebrate Their Survival!

Yorta Yorta Survival Weekend – Saturday January 25 & Sunday January 26, 2003

The Yorta Yorta nation will play host to a Survival Weekend on their land, in the Barmah Forest*, next Invasion Day (Sunday January 26, 2003). After the rejection of their native title application in the High Court of Australia (a decision that exhausts all available domestic avenues), the Yorta Yorta will hold a weekend-long event on January 25 and January 26, 2003 at the Dharnya Centre (Sandridge Rd, Barmah Forest). It will be an event that will feature some of south-eastern Australia’s best Indigenous/non-Indigenous musicians & performers; along with forums, stalls, recreational activities in the Barmah Forest and a huge camp-out on Yorta Yorta land. Expect Lou Bennet (formerly of Tiddas), Richard Frankland, Peter Rotumah, The Maza Sisters, the Sea of Hands, the fabulous Brolga Boys and other special guest speakers and performers. All are welcomed to join in this event.

It'll be a case of BYO camping equipment and food; although the event organisers will provide BBQ facilities, entertainment and an unmatched way to mark January 26. There will also be forums for non-Indigenous people to become informed and take action and the Yorta Yorta nation will deliver a statement on 'Australia Day' about their intended future plans. The weekend will also be a platform to launch a massive fundraising effort to cover the shamefully astronomical costs of the legal bills that the Yorta Yorta must foot. Mark it in your diaries, dust off your camping equipment, inform your friends and join the Yorta Yorta people in their pursuit of justice!

*The Barmah Forest is on the banks of the Murray River, 22 kms north-east of Echuca (all up, it's about 3-hours drive from Melbourne). For further information call bryan on (03) 9483 1363; or see www.nativetitle.org/yortayorta (to be launched Thursday January 9) for maps, camping tips, promo down-loads, press releases and the latest concert programs.
