Acknowledgments
This book has evolved out of the efforts of people
acting to halt the destruction of the earth's forests.
Friends of the Earth Fitzroy thanks all those who continue to
voice their conviction that forests are worth caring for. We
hope the suggestions we have made here help address these concerns.
In
compiling this ninth edition of the Good Wood and Paper Guide,
particular thanks are extended to the Mullum Trust for their
generous financial assistance.
Disclaimer
The purpose of this guide is to provide information about the
origins of various timbers on the Victorian market and to enable
readers to choose the least environmentally damaging materials
suited to their specific needs. Although we believe that the
information provided is accurate, it is intended as a guide
and does not represent the rendering of architectural advice
or services.
> In September 1993 Amcor Paper Group took over the papermaking
division of Associated Pulp and Paper Mills, renaming its
interests Australian Paper, thus giving Amcor a monopoly on
all fine paper manufacturing in Australia. In 1994 the Australian
Federal Government at the recommendation of the Industry Commission,
removed the sales tax exemption from recycled paper. This
short sighted decision severely impacted on the sale of recycled
paper in Australia. Amcor no longer produces a 100 % post
consumer waste office paper, although it has the technology
and machines to do so at the Fairfield mill in Victoria. Amcor's'
recycled brands such as Renew are made predominately from
virgin fibre mill offcuts which are sourced from plantations
and native forest. Unfortunately this edition of the Good
Wood and Paper Guide has been printed on imported post consumer
waste paper.
